Madrid: Spanish Primera Liga side Sporting Gijon confirmed the appointment of former Spanish coach Javier Clemente as the new manager of the club.
Clemente replaces Manuel Preciado, who was sacked two weeks ago and takes over from Inaki Tejera, who took over the reins of the team on a temporary basis, overseeing a 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna and Sunday`s 0-4 defeat in Valencia.
Clemente, 61, joins Sporting on a deal that lasts until June. He has had a long career as a coach, which saw him lead the Spanish national team between 1992-1998.
He also coached Athletic Club Bilbao, for whom he also played on three occasions, winning league titles in 1983 and 1984. He also coached Atletico Madrid, Espanyol and Betis as well as Tenerife, Marseille among several other clubs.
Clemente is known not only for his defensive and direct style of football, but also for getting the best out of teams with limited resources.
