New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday become the third highest all-time scorer for Real Madrid. The Portuguese superstar scored his 290th goal for the Spanish giants in a comfortable 2-0 win over Elche in La Liga. He achieved this feat in 241 games.
With the goal, the World Player of the Year has moved closer to become Real Madrid's ultimate scorer. And in this rich goal-scoring form, he is expected to eclipse legendary Raul Gonzalez's tally of 323 goals.
Alfredo Di Stefano, one of the true greats of the game, is second on the list with 305 goals.
Earlier, the European champions had claimed on their website that the former Manchester United player reached the 290-goal milestone in their Champions League last-16 first leg tie against Schalke on 18 February.
However, it turned out that one of the league goals attributed Ronaldo had officially been credited to his compatriot Pepe. The said goal was scored against Real Sociedad in September 2010.
The win over at Elche helped Carlo Ancelloti's side extend the lead over rivals Barcelona – who suffered a shock defeat at home against Malaga on Saturday – by four points at the top.
