New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo sparked off a controversy after refused to discuss whether Lionel Messi deserved the Golden Boot awarded to him at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The Ballon d'Or winner was also crowned UEFA's Best Player in Europe on Thursday beating Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer.

After the awards ceremony, speaking in an interview to a Portuguese TV channel, Ronaldo said: "Everyone can see, make their own judgments, the people in the world of football are intelligent. It would be a very interesting question for him. I cannot be honest about it."

It has been speculated that FIFA had to hand the Golden Boot award to Lionel Messi due to pressure from sponsors like Adidas, of who the Barcelona star is the poster boy.

Many voiced in the football fraternity believed Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez were more deserving of the award than Lionel Messi.

Both Ronaldo and Messi have had a long standing rivalry on the pitch and when either of them makes a comment on the other, the football universe is split in to halves.

This latest comment by the Portuguese indirectly hints that the award was not fairly judged. It would be interesting to see how Messi responds to this swipe from Ronaldo.
