Dempo beat Salgaocar in a thrilling contest

Margao: Koko Sakibo scored a fine brace as Dempo Sports Club overcame league leaders Salgaocar Sports Club 3-2 in the Kingfisher Goa Super League at Nehru Stadium, on Thursday.

Dempo drew the first blood as Koko Sakibo fired in after receiving a useful through ball from Japanese midfielder Yusef Kato after just 13 minutes.

At the half hour mark, Ryuji Seoka took advantage of a defensive lapse to place in the net for Salgaocar`s equaliser.

Two minutes before the break, Koko did well to lose his marker in the box and head home from a Ranty Martins` cross from the right to restore Dempo`s lead.

Both team`s continued to work hard in the second half, but the fans did not get to witness any more goals until the final seven minutes.

Mickey Fernandes set Romeo Fernandes off on a blistering counter attack and his perfect ball was guided into the net by Ranty Martins to put Dempo 3-1 ahead.

In the very last minute Dempo`s Peter Carvalho brought down Milagres Gonsalves in the box and the referee wasted no time in pointing to the dreaded spot.

Ryuji stepped up to convert for Salgaocar, but it proved too little to late as Dempo ran out the winners.

Dempo who have collected 21 points from eleven matches have now cut Salgaocar`s lead at the top to just one point and still have a game in hand with the title race reaching its climax.
