Panaji: Dempo Sports Club owner Srinivas Dempo is in favour of an IPL-like league for football in the country to attract spectators as well as sponsors.
"You need something like IPL in football which will make this sport financially sound and will also end up having required infrastructure for the clubs," Dempo, who is also the Goa Football Association (GFA) president said on Monday.
Dempo said football clubs in the country are run by promoters, who spend money from their pockets.
"This is not a case with cricket. Due to tournaments like IPL, there is money coming in it," he said.
Dempo said corporate sponsorship for Indian football will come only when there is a fan base.
"Fan base will come when you have clubs which could be identified by people with themselves," he said.
"People identify themselves with Mumbai Indians in cricket although it is funded by Ambani. Its Mumbai Indians not Ambani or Reliance. We want football clubs like Panjim Giants, so that the fans can identify themselves," he added.
Insisting that Panaji should have a football stadium, Dempo said unless there is infrastructure, one should not expect professionalism.
"It`s a chicken and egg story. When you build stadium, youths will come and start playing. People will come to watch them. A spectator base would be created. It is only then that the corporates will come with sponsorship offers," he said.
Dempo said GFA does not have enough money to build a stadium and hence a proposal has been put up before the state government to construct a stadium in Panaji.
