Margao: Goan Football giant`s Dempo Sports Club and Salgaocar Sports Club will battle it out under flood lights in the Kingfisher Goa Super League on Wednesday at the Nehru Stadium.
Third placed Dempo are currently on 18 points from 10 matches, four behind league leaders Salgaocar, who are on 22 points from 11 outings. This game is crucial as a win for Dempo would see them not only move to second place, but with a game in hand put them firmly back in the driving seat against their nearest rivals. A win for Salgaocar will bring them ever so closer to clinching the title. In their last Pro League encounter Dempo had eased to a 4-0 win over Sporting Clube de Goa in the Ilhas derby. Salgaocar have enjoyed mixed results in the Pro League recently. A 3-0 victory over Vasco Sports Club in the Mormugao derby was followed up by a a very late come from behind 1-1 draw against Churchill Brothers. When the two clubs met on 28 November 2011 in the first-phase I-League clash, Salgaocar had edged past Dempo 3-2. There was a record attendance for this encounter and with the new floodlights installed, tomorrow`s game would be the first day-nighter at Goa in seven years. PTI
