Margao: Aniston Fernandes scored a brace as Vasco SC posted a facile 3-1 win over Garhwal Riffles on Friday in their Pool D preliminary round match to set up a semifinal clash against AIFF U-19 in the 127th Durand Cup.
The semifinal will be played on October 25.
Vasco had the better ball possession in the first half and they took the lead in the 9th minute through Fernandes, who curled the ball to the far end of the net from a 40-yards shot off a pass from Quan Gomes at Signals ground, Navelim, Margao, here.
Six minutes later, Jerose Oliviera, who missed a chance at the start of the match, then increased the lead with a header after Fernandes took a free kick from the left.
Garhwal Riffles fought back and reduced the margin in the 17th minute when Deepak Negi netted the ball.
Vasco were leading 2-1 at half time.
After the change of ends, there was a heavy shower that made the play difficult as the ground was water logged, especially at the Garhwal Riffles keeper area.
Vasco kept up the pressure as Fernandes scored a brace after he receive a pass from the left.
