Kolkata: Defending champions East Bengal began their Calcutta Football League Premier Division campaign with a 3-1 win over George Telegraph at their home ground on Saturday.
East Bengal, who have already made it clear that it would give the youngsters a chance in this tournament, started on an inspiring fashion when Ravinder Singh gave them lead in the eighth minute.
Sunil Thakur doubled the lead in the 40th minute before Robin Singh settled the issue in the 46th minute.
East Bengal held the 3-0 lead till George Telegraph pulled one back in the dying minutes when Orok Orok struck one in the 92nd minute.
The win helped East Bengal take the pole position in the 11-team standings with three points.
I-League clubs East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and United SC have been seeded directly into the final phase of CFL.
In a rejigged format, CFL had a first phase with 14 non I-League teams.
The teams were divided in two groups with four top teams making the cut to main round.
Aryan Club topped group A followed by George Telegraph, BNR and Tollygunge Agragami to make the cut.
In group B Mohammedan SC topped, followed by Police AC, Southern Samity and Peerless SC.
There will also be a third phase to be played between the six teams who fail to advance to the second stage to decide the standings because of no relegation in this year.
