New Delhi: Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra has asked to leave Old Trafford, though the 33-year-old has not yet put in a official transfer request. The news comes a day after Serie A champions Juventus apprached United inquring about the Frenchman`s availibility.
After the end of the 2013-14 Premier League season, the Old Trafford club triggered a clause in the defender`s contract, which extended his contract to another year. But now Evra has got in touch with the club asking to push through his move to Juventus.
After signing for the Red Devils from Monaco for £5.5 million in 2006, the left-back has played in 379 matches for the club. During his tenure, he won five league titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2008.
Patrice Evra was a permanent fixture in Sir Alex Ferguson`s United teams ever since he signed for the club. However, there has been a drop in his form in the last couple of seasons. Under David Moyes, Evra made 45 appearences for the club.
The summer has seen Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leave the club, which made the left-back the only experienced defender at the club. However, United signed Luke Shaw, making him the third most expensive defender in the world.
Under new manager Louis van Gaal, it is expected the club would be looking to rebuild around the younger players and Luke Shaw would be the preferred left-back at United for the 2014-15 season.
Patrice Evra was part of the France team at the World Cup and played in four out of five matches. The Frenchman has been a great servant for Manchester United and his experience at the back would definitely be missed.
