Crystal Palace appoint Alan Pardew as new manager

New Delhi: Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace on Saturday appointed former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew as their new manager.

Pardew a former Palace player during his playing years, will take charge in the FA Cup third round tie against non-league side Dover Athletic on Sunday.

Pardew replaced Neil Warnock, who was sacked last Saturday after a string of poor results. Pardew had watched the London side draw 0-0 with Aston Villa in the Premier League clash on Thursday.

A statement on Palace`s official website read: "Crystal Palace Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Pardew as the club`s new manager after signing a three-and-a-half-year contract."

Palace posted the news of Pardew's appointemnt through social micro-blogging site, Twitter.

Pardew who spent four years in charge of Newcastle United, managed 155 games winning 58 and losing 63. He had a winning percentage of 37%.

The manager was never a favourite with many of the Tyneside club`s fans and eventually jumped at the chance of returning to Palace where he spent four years as a player. After a difficult start to the campaign, Pardew won five games in succession with Newcastle but it did little to please the fans.

Owner Mike Ashley too didn't show much interest and allowed him to speak to Palace. Earlier, Pardew was offered a six-year contract with Newcastle in 2012. The English manager has a task in hand to help Palace survive relegation in the EPL.

Last year it was Tony Pulis who helped them battle relegation, and Pardew will hope he repeats Pulis' heroics.
