New Delhi: Mario Balotelli is always in demand. If his services are not available, his shirts do the talking. Liverpool chief executive, Ian Ayre revealed that the Anfield outfit sold GBP 50,000 worth of Balotelli shirts on the very first day.
Balotelli, 24, arrived in Liverpool during the summer for a GBP 16m fee after spending a season with with Serie A giants AC Milan. The former Manchester City player was considered a direct replacement for Luis Suarez, who left the Reds for Barcelona just after the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
Despite his outlandish talent, Balotelli is still regarded as a maverick, and many questioned Brendan Rodgers' decision to sign the Italian. Then the Anfield boss said it was a 'calculated risk.' Indeed, with a persona which can easily abhor many and at the same time draw admiration, Balotelli is a risk worth taking.
Speaking at the Soccerex Global Convention in Manchester, Ayre claimed that the GBP 16m transfer began to generate a return on day one. The GBP 50,000 worth of shirts would work out at approximately 770 adult shirts at GBP 65 apiece.
“You have to be ready for these opportunities. In the past we didn’t capitalise on opportunities but those days are long gone,” added Ayre.
