Louis van Gaal joins Manchester United fans at Munich air disaster tribute

New Delhi: Louis van Gaal on Friday joined a number Manchester United fans who turned up to pay their respects to the victims of Munich air disaster, which claimed 23 lives in 1958.

The ill-fated plane crashed at the third take-off attempt, killing 23 people, including eight Busby Babes. They were flying back from a European Cup tie in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia) on 6 February and they stopped to refuel in Germany.

But Sir Bobby Charlton and Matt Busby miraculously survived the accident.

The Dutchman said, "It was a group of players who gave a lot of joy to the people at that time... They played a big part in the history of this club. We have to remember that always."

Elsewhere, past and present United players, took to social media to pay their respects, using the hashtags #BusbyBabes #FlowersOfManchester in tribute.

The English FA, rival clubs Liverpool and Manchester City also paid tribute.
