New Delhi: Queen's Park Rangers midfield general Joey Barton accused Arsenal of having 'no spine or character' while speaking on a radio show.

Barton, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live said: “In big games they (rival managers) get under his skin and work them out tactically. You think of his teams of [Emmanuel] Petit, [Patrick] Vieira, [Tony] Adams, [Martin] Keown and all those kind of warriors. You look around the Arsenal dressing room now, the people who would win you those kind of games against the top four clubs - they don't really have an abundance of them. At the latter stages of a season they come unstuck because of that lack of - I hate to say it - a real lack of character or spine within the team”.

Wenger completed 18 years as Arsenal boss earlier this week. However, he has not managed to replicate the success of the first 9 years of his tenure. Despite winning the 2013-14 FA Cup, the Frenchman's ability to beat big teams and outmaneuver big managers has been repeatedly questioned.

Barton, who has a reputation of being outspoken, especially on social media came under fire from Arsenal fans for his remarks. He then went on two explain his comments on the show in a series of tweets.

Arsenal face Chelsea on Sunday and given Wenger's poor record against Jose Mourinho, the chances of Arsenal fans getting an opportunity to have a go at Barton are very slim. However, one can count on the QPR midfielder to engage in a bit of banter if the Gunners are beaten this weekend.
