Berlin: Winning the right to host the European football championship in 2024 remains the German football federation`s leading objective of the next decade, DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach said Tuesday.
World champions Germany have already hosted two World Cups in 1974 and 2006 and the European Championship in 1988.
"We`re very optimistic because our situation is excellent regarding stadia. It`s clear that for us there is no need for new constructions," he said.
European governing body UEFA will name the host country in 2018.
Niersbach added that another major project was the construction of a new national football centre at a cost of an estimated 89 million euros ($107m).
"It`s the biggest investment in the DFB`s history. We`re totally behind the project because it represents the future."
"We don`t want to build an empire. We want to be a reference in football," said German team manager Oliver Bierhoff.
Short term objectives include winning a second European under-21s title next June, qualification for the Olympics after a 28-year absence, along with securing a third women`s World Cup trophy in Canada.
