London: Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu has tipped teammate Fernando Torres to shine at the Euro Cup for Spain, and believes the 50 million pound flop would also perform well for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
Torres has scored just 12 goals in 43 games for Chelsea since quitting Liverpool in January last year, and was dropped by Spain coach Vicente del Bosque.
The Spanish international scored in last month’s 4-1 friendly win over South Korea and came on as a sub in their final warm-up game, a 1-0 win over China.
“I think that Torres will be a very important player for the national team at the Euros because he is a player with great quality and experience and these characteristics are very important in a forward,” The Daily Star quoted Romeu, as saying.
“He is very important for Chelsea, too. You only have to look at how the fans love him and chant his name. He is also loved amongst players and directors at the club,” he added.
“It is true that when you lose something, you realise how important it is and this is what happened with Fernando in the national team,” he said.
Romeu further added: “When Del Bosque left him out, he did so to give him a warning and he took it well. Naturally he continued to work until the end of the season and now he has a great chance of having a good European Championship.”
