Kiev: Highlights from Day 9 of the Euro Cup where four teams-Greece, Russia, Czech Republic and Poland were in action.
Greece and Russia locked horns in Warsaw while Czech Republic and Poland faced each other at Wroclaw.
Russia crash out as opportunistic Greece advance to the quarters
Greece 1:0 Russia
Russian team had a scorching start to the tournament when they demolished Czech 4-1. However, they lost to Greece on Saturday failing to breach their defensive wall. The Greeks, on the other hand, were quick to convert a chance after a defensive lapse gave them an unlikely lead even after the Russians were in control of the game.
Sergei Ignashevich misplaced a header and veteran Sotiris Karagounis milked the opportunity to fire in a low shot giving his team a 1-0 lead in the injury time of the first half. Advocaat’s side came close to scoring an equalizer with five minutes remaining but Dzagoev failed to deposit his header into the net.
Czechs advance as co-hosts crash out
Czech Republic 1:0 Poland
A tense game where both the sides needed an outright win to advance to the last-eight saw co-hosts Poland succumb to a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Czech Republic.
It was the Poles that dominated the proceedings in the first half but failed to make the stuttering Czechs pay as the first half ended with both teams level at 0-0.
During the second half, Petr Jiracek calmly sent one past Tyton to give his side lead in the 72nd minute that his side managed to hold onto till the final whistle was blown.
