French league votes to reduce relegation

Paris: Only two teams will be relegated from the French top flight at the end of next season, the Professional Football League (LFP) board announced on Thursday despite criticism from several clubs.

The French league president, Frederic Thiriez, confirmed that there had been a majority vote in favour of sticking by an initial decision taken in May to relegate two clubs from the 20-team Ligue 1 instead of the usual three, with only two clubs coming up from Ligue 2.

The move was made despite an open letter written last month by the president of second-tier Clermont, signed by 23 of his counterparts, demanding an extraordinary general meeting to call for the the reform to be annulled.
