I was right to play Boruc in Arsenal draw: AdkinsLondon: The 47-year-old admitted that the keeper made a nervy start in the clash with the Gunners but stands by his decision after holding Arsene Wenger`s men to a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Nigel Adkins has insisted that he was right to play Artur Boruc in goal ahead of Kelvin Davis for Southampton`s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on New Year`s Day.

The Pole made a shaky start to the clash at St Mary`s, failing to catch a routine corner delivery and then fumbling another straightforward cross, as well as slicing numerous kicks away from their intended targets.

The 32-year-old, who is one of three keepers to represent the newly-promoted side this season, hadn`t featured since the 2-1 loss at home to Tottenham back in October, while he conceded four goals against West Ham in his other appearance for the club.

Despite the former Celtic man`s inclusion being the eighth time across all competition that Adkins swapped keepers, he stands by the decision but was coy on who would continue between the sticks.

“These are the decisions you’ve got to go and make as a manager,” he told reporters.

“Artur has obviously had a bit of a shaky start to the game but he’s gathered his composure and you know that’s what you’re going to get when you’ve got experienced goalkeepers in there.

“He’s been very impressive in training, his attitude has been outstanding so I’ve given him the opportunity.

“Everyone knows how much I like [Kelvin Davis], he’s top drawer."

The south coast outfit managed to earn a well-deserved point against a below-par Gunners outfit, Arsene Wenger`s men needing a Guly do Prado own goal to cancel out Gaston Ramirez`s opener.

Adkins` men next face the visit of reigning European champions Chelsea in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
