India may need 800 years to qualify for the World Cup: BhaichungKolkata: Bhaichung Bhutia, the name synonymous with Indian football for the masses, is of the opinion that for India to qualify for the World Cup, a complete overhaul of systems in required and the sooner that is attended to, the better.

In an interview with football magazine, 90 Minutes, the former Indian skipper was questioned as to what was a realistic target for qualifying for the world’s grandest stage of competition.

Bhaichung was forthright in his assessment and highlighted the importance of youth development.

“Well, first we should make sure that a proper system and structure is in place at clubs and nationally, where youth development is given top priority. Hypothetically, if that starts tomorrow, then we can look at a target of around eight more years. Till the time that we don’t do that, we can look at another 800 years,” said Bhaichung.

When asked as to when India could qualify or host any kind of World Cup, he replied on a lighter note saying,” would have to just hire a parrot and ask it to pick up a card!”

The president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Praful Patel had declared that India are to bid to host the 2017 U-17 World Cup when FIFA president Sepp Blatter visited the country back in March this year.

Bhaichung remains optimistic of India’s chances of hosting the mega event as it would give them a chance to develop the infrastructure.

“U–17 is realistic. I think it’s important we do it. Whatever the results may be of the national team, does not matter. Infrastructure development will happen, we might have some financial support from the Government of India and from FIFA to get that infrastructure developed, and then things can start from there. So even if we end up losing by a big margin, I don’t mind,” Bhaichung was quoted saying in the magazine.

He has been trying to change Indian football for years. You cant possibly think that we will qualify for the world cup in the next 20 years unless we overhaul the whole system and even then there is alot of work. p.s. he might be average compared to world elite players, but he lead the Indian team with quality performance and results. Dont forgot where he came from and the discrimination that he receives because of the way he looks.

Bhaichung was a below average player who got laurels simple as he got some openings in the international circuit. His comment about 800 years is unmatured and uncalled for. There are far better potentials in the country and they will do far better than what he did. He should learn to keep the negative comments to himself and talk sensibly of the areas which he think can be addressed and which would uplilft the game.

India can never qualify for the World Cup. The state of the game in this country is really bad and I am sure that no one is interested and working to promote the game in India.

India do not need 800 years, but 5-10 years is good enough as long as we have stronger players. To get stronger players, you need to go to Punjab.Apart from stronger players,we need a camp where one has to sleep/train and at the same time study also.Need foreign coach from somewhere like Brazil or UK.Need funds from the government.these are the few things required to make a good football team
