Indian footballer dies of heart attack on field
Bangalore: A local footballer died following a massive heart attack while playing near here on Wednesday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Venkatesh (34), police sources said.
"Venkatesh who used to play for Bangalore Mars Club suffered a massive heart attack and died on the spot while playing a match against South Western Railways," police said. Police are investigating.
The death coincides with the English Premier League's decision to review its medical procedures following Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba's cardiac arrest while playing against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Muamba is recovering in hospital.
It was in Bangalore that top Indian club Dempo's Brazilian striker Cristiano Junior died after colliding with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul in the final of the 2004 Federation Cup.
