New Delhi: After tasting first win of the Indian Super League, Delhi Dynamos head coach Harm Van Veldhoven on Saturday said the first goal of the 4-1 thrashing of Chennaiyin FC made all the difference.
Wim Raymaekers struck in the second minute of the match and Dynamos maintained their attacking game to outclass their opponents.
"We had a perfect start with Raymaekers getting the early goal. It's always good to score early. Had we scored early against Pune City FC (in the opening match), we would have won that match like today's," he said at the post-match press conference.
"I have midfielders of the calibre of Hans Mulder, Bruno Herrero and the Steven Dias and we did not give any chance to Chennai. The second, third and fourth goals came. I am proud of my players," said the Dutch with his trademark smiling face.
Even after taking a 2-0 lead at the half time, he said he told his players to go for more goals.
"Goals are important, we could not score in our first match at home and we scored four today and our fans must be happy," he added.
Veldhoven had a word of praise for former India winger Steven Dias who played his first ISL match today for his supplies from the right flank including the assist that led to the second goal.
"Dias was doing very well at the trainings and he was gaining in confidence ans so I fielded him today. He was superb with the assist for the second goal and then some other fine efforts from the right side," said Veldhoven about Dias who replaced Francis Fernandes in the starting line-up.
Brazillian Gustavo dos santos scored a goal through a solo effort after coming into the match in the 89th minute and Dynamos coach said he could be considered for longer time in future matches.
Talking about the upcoming matches, he said, "The Kolkata match was a very different match and the next against NorthEast would also be a tough one. They (NorthEast) have won a good game against Mumbai."
Chennaiyin FC head coach Marco Materazzi said that the ISL scheduling was hard on the players but conceded that his side lost to a better side.
"The scheduling is hard and the players deserved rest. But today we lost to a better side. Delhi started better and we were on the backfoot after the first and then the second goal against us," he said.
"But that is football and that is life. We are not the best team of the ISL as of now. But we have to work out what has gone wrong for future matches."
