New Delhi: Italian World Cup winner, Alessandro Del Piero, on Thursday joined Indian Super League's Delhi franchise -- Delhi Dynamos, as its marquee player.
The 39-year-old inked the deal with Dynamos for the ten-week long tournament, which will commence in October and has been modelled along the lines of cricket`s cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL).
Del Piero`s signing was confirmed during the press conference called by ISL organisers, who have already persuaded former French star David Trezeguet and ex-England goalkeepr David James to sign up.
In ISL, after David Trezeguet, Robert Pires and Joan Capdevilla; Del Piero is the fourth World Cup winner to sign up as a marquee player.
At club level, Piero`s most successful stint was with Serie A team Juventus FC, for who he played for or 19 years (11 years as captain), and holds the club records for most goals (290) and most appearances (705).
Eight clubs will take part in the tournament, which will start from October 12.
Many Bollywood stars and sports personalities have shown their interest towards the league.
To give Indian footballers more exposure during the league, ISL made it clear that at least five of the starting line-up for each team must be Indian.
Surprisingly, Indian national captain Sunil Chhetri is among several India internationals who have so far rejected the chance of joining the league.
