Joel Santana named Vasco da Gama coach for fifth time

Rio de Janeiro: Joel Santana has been appointed the head coach of struggling Brazilian football club Vasco da Gama for the fifth time.

The 65-year-old Friday replaced Adilson Batista, who stepped down after Vasco's 0-5 defeat to Avai in Brazil's Serie B last Saturday, reports Xinhua.

Santana, who coached South Africa at the 2010 World Cup, has been unemployed since being sacked by Bahia in May 2013 after just one month in the job.

Vasco are currently fifth in the Serie B standings at the season's halfway point.

Santana's first game in charge of the four-time Serie A champions will be Saturday's trip to fourth-placed America.
