New Delhi: Lionel Messi on Friday picked yet another award in his already glittering career by winning the 2014-15 UEFA Best Player in Europe Award. The Argentine play-maker beat his Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
The fifth edition of the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award ceremony was held in Monaco, with the who's who of world football attending the gala. Europe's football governing body, as usual, invited 54 members of the press from around the continent – one from every member association – to vote for the best player from last season.
Messi, who was touted the favourite to win the award, had a successful season with the Catalan giants. He broke the long standing Telmo Zarra’s record of 251 La Liga goals with a hat-trick against Sevilla on 22 November, and helped Luis Enrique's side complete an unprecedented second treble winning the Spanish League, Champions League and Copa de Rey. During the campaign, the 28-year-old scored 58 goals.
Messi previously won the award in 2011-12 and has since been a finalist each time, since the inception of the award in 2011. His Barca team-mate Andres Iniesta, Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery and Real Madrid's Ronaldo have each won the award once.
Earlier today, Messi also got the UEFA Goal of the Year award beating Ronaldo. Messi scored a stunning goal against German champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League first leg match of the semi-final last April.
