Matthias Sammer targets titles after extending Bayern deal

Berlin: Bayern Munich`s director of sport Matthias Sammer has said he wants to bring more titles to the Bavarian giants following Wednesday`s announcement that he has extended his contract until 2018.

"I am grateful for the confidence from the board and also for the good co-operation with my colleagues," said the 47-year-old former Germany international.

"I promise I will continue with the same passion and intensity with which I have already brought to the job.

"We all have big goals with FC Bayern and I want to help that we achieve them."

Sammer, a former technical director of the German Football Association (DFB) and Borussia Dortmund manager, took over as Bayern`s sports director in July 2012 and helped steer them to the treble of European, league and cup titles in 2013.

Under coach Pep Guardiola, Bayern are currently four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and have already reached the last 16 of the Champions League as confirmed group winners with two matches left.

Bayern are on course to win the Bundesliga for the third consecutive year.

"The board decided unanimously at its last meeting to extend Matthias Sammer`s contract. This is a big vote of confidence in him," said Bayern`s president Karl Hopfner.

"We`re delighted that Matthias will assume the position of sports director on the board for three more years."
