Kolkata : Mohun Bagan entered the final of the Platinum Jubilee Cup, pipping England`s Sheffield FC 1-0 in the first semifinal of the four-team meet at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Friday.
As the match continued to stoppage time, the city giant broke the deadlock as forward Ashim Biswas flicked a Snehashish Chakraborty corner to beat the Sheffield custodian.
Mohun Bagan will now face the winners of the second semifinal between East Bengal and hosts Mohammedan Sporting.
After a lacklustre first half, which produced no real threat to either side due to poor co-ordination, both the teams shrugged early lethargy to start raids into rival forts for result.
India`s one of the oldest clubs Mohun Bagan, who first won IFA Shield in 1911, fielded a second rung team against the world`s oldest club, Sheffield FC, and the game did not rise
to a level.
Bagan coach Stanley Rozario, however, changed his strategy and brought three regulars -- Kingshuk Debnath, Snehashish and Souvik Chakraborty to sharpen the attack in the
Sheffield FC got a chance to lead when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute after Kingshuk tripped Jordan William Eagers inside the box. But the shot from Ashley Malcolm Burbeary was stopped by Bagan keeper Sangram Mukherjee.
The visitors, who play in the Northern Premier League Division One South which is about six rung below the English Premier League, received a standing ovation from the
spectators at the end of the game.
The final will be played on Sunday.
Mohammedan Sporting are organising the tournament to mark the platinum jubilee of their first triumph in the Calcutta Football League in 1934. Mohammedan Sporting were the first Indian club to win this prestigious title.
