Mohun Bagan scrapes to a 2-0 win in I-League

Kolkata: Mohun Bagan scored a 2-0 win over Mumbai FC in a round six I-League match at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Thursday, but not before being tested by the inexperienced side.

Subair Muritala Ali (45+1st) and Ashim Biswas (79th) struck in each half to help Mohun Bagan pick their second consecutive win.

The three points helped Mohun Bagan improve their position in the standings with eight points from six matches while the Mumbai outfit remained on nine points from as many outings.

Fresh from their win over JCT in the last match, Mohun Bagan struck at the stroke of half-time in an otherwise listless first-half that saw lack of creativity from the Subhas Bhowmick`s boys.

The inexperienced Mumbai FC, on the other hand, sparkled in patches, giving the home side some jittery moments on a few occasions.

But Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul, adjudged man-of-the-match, held his nerve under the bar, standing tall or stretching maximum to thwart a couple of Mumbai FC attacks in the first half.

Having returned to the starting line-up, right-back Ishfaq Ahmed had a forgettable outing missing a sitter on one occasion.

Gouranga Dutta too let the team down from the right flank as the medio made little use of a Snehashish Chakraborty centre as Mohun Bagan struggled to take the lead in front of home support.

Shilton, meanwhile, saved Mohun Bagan from the blushes to deny Nicolas Rodrigues freekick in the 30th minute.

Just when the match seemed to peter out to a goalless first-half, ever-dependable Barreto helped Muritala for the lead in the injury time of the first half.

Barreto`s left-footer centre from the left was nicely headed into the net by Muritala to lift their spirits going into the break.

The second-half was equally lacklustre with Mohun Bagan missing two sure-shot goals in a space of two minutes.

While Gauranga blundered in front of the open net from a Barreto pass in the 63rd minutes, moments later the Brazilian was equally unimpressive from a Snehashish Chakraborty pass.

That said, Mohun Bagan made up for their bloomers when Biswas made it 2-0, banging it past Mumbai FC custodian Ishant Debnath.
