Buenos Aires: An Argentine first division football match was abandoned Monday after a fan was killed and another badly injured in clashes with riot police.
The incident occurred before Lanus`s match with Estudiantes at the Ciudad de la Plata stadium in Buenos Aires province. Officials decided to call the game off when they were informed of the news at half-time. "Police reported that a (Lanus) supporter had died and in the face of this situation it was necessary to suspend the match," Estudiantes president Enrique Lombardi said. "It was a unanimous decision by both clubs. It was for humanitarian reasons." The tragedy comes just three days after Velez Sarsfield`s home fixture against All Boys was abandoned due to fan violence. Estudiantes were leading Monday`s match 2-0 when the match was ended. IANS
