The Hague: PEC Zwolle surprisingly captured the Dutch Super Cup, the Johan Cruijff Schaal, for the first time by beating reigning league champions Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam.
After the stunning 5-1 victory of PEC Zwolle over Ajax in the Dutch Cup final in April this year, Ajax was expected to take revenge Sunday, reports Xinhua.
However, without Dutch internationals Jasper Cillesen, Daley Blind and Joel Veltman, who had extra rest after the World Cup, and injured Ricardo van Rhijn and Viktor Fischer, Ajax were put in a ver lackluster performance.
New signings Arkadiusz Milik (Bayer Leverkusen on loan) and Nick Viergever (AZ) started for Ajax with the latter hitting the post after three minutes. Viergever was double unlucky, because he also got injured and was substituted before half-time.
PEC Zwolle became more dangerous in the counter-attack and in the 55th minute they found the net. Stef Nijland finished a cross by Kamohelo Mokotjo.
Although Ajax had more ball possession the Amsterdam based team did not create any chances. Only in the final minute Zwolle-goalkeeper Boer saved his team after a header by Niklas Moisander.
