Premier League: Newcastle United sack manager John Carver

New Delhi: Premier League outfit Newcastle United sacked caretaker manager John Carver and coach Steve Stone, according to reports on Tuesday.

Newcastle who got saved from relegation in the 2014-15 season, decided to sack Carver who was in charge of the Magpies as a care taking manager for 20 matches since the departure of former manager Alan Pardew who joined Crystal Palace.

Carver's record was poor as he managed to win just three matches and took the club to relegation battle up till the final matchweek before managing to survive.

Carver was adamant all the time that he is the right man for the job and wanted to take over as the head manager but owner Mike Ashley though otherwise.

According to sources, former England and Derby manager Steve McClaren is the favourite to become Pardew's permanent successor when he returns from holiday later this week.

McClaren was twice approached by Newcastle towards the end of the season but preferred to stay at Derby.

He was then sacked when Derby failed to reach the Championship play-offs.

Carver returned to his Newcastle in 2010 and was appointed assistant manager to Pardew the following year.
