Margao: Pune FC defeated Salgaocar by a solitary goal to taste their first success in the I-league at Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday.
The all important goal in the sixth round match came from Selwyn Fernandes in the 33rd minute.
Pune FC were dominant in the midfield and had better ball possession in the first half. They had a chance to forge ahead in the fifth minute but Keita Mandjou`s header missed the target narrowly.
Salgaocar tried to build several moves but their effort did not yield any positive result. Instead, their defence caved in and they conceded a goal in the 33rd minute.
The solitary goal was result of a combined effort of Sunil Kumar, Tomba Singh and Fernandes, who found the target.
Salgaocar looked a different side after the change of ends. They looked confident in their attack and kept on the pressure on the rival defence to find the equaliser.
The Goan side had the best chance to equalise in the 53rd minute, but Gilbert Oliveira`s shot from inside the box was blocked by a rival defender.
Pune FC, with today`s win, took their point tally to seven points from six matches. Salgaocar, who suffered their second successive defeat today, remained on 12 points from six matches.
