Royal Wahingdoh shock Mohun Bagan 2-1 in Fed Cup football

Pune: Chenco fired in two goals as qualifiers Royal Wahingdoh stunned fancied Mohun Bagan 2-1 in the opening match of the Federation Cup football tournament on Saturday.

Chenco stole the limelight with strikes in the 49th and 54th minutes as the country`s premier league-cum-knockout tournament produced an upset on the very first day itself.

Multiple times champions Mohun Bagan reduced the margin in the 75th minute through Ashim Biswas in the Group A match.

Mohun Bagan were unlucky not to have surged into the lead in the first half. Sunil Chhetri was deprived by the upright twice and then Ramirez Barreto`s header hit the crosspiece.

But that was all Mohun Bagan could do as their Meghalaya-based opponents were clearly the better side in the second session. Mohun Bagan failed to match the pace of Wahingdoh players as the match progresses.

Taking advantage of Mohun Bagan`s three-man defence, Wahingdoh used the flanks to make raids in their opponents` citadel. And a slow Rakesh Masih and Anwar Ali further helped their cause. Add to that, a frustrated NP Pradeep was sent off for a second yellow card.

Everytime Wahingdoh players attacked, Mohun Bagan players panicked. Wahingdoh threatened to score more as they kept most of the ball possession with them. In fact, Mohun Bagan were lucky not to have conceded more goals.
