Dynamo Moscow were denied the chance to go second in the table after being held to a goalless draw at home by Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League on Sunday.
Dynamo, who won the Soviet league 11 times but are still seeking their first Russian title, are on 40 points, the same as city rivals Spartak, seven points behind the leaders Lokomotiv.
Three-time former champions Zenit St Petersburg, who take on Samara on Monday in their first match under new manager Andre Villas-Boas, sit second on 41 points.
Dynamo dominated in general but missed all their scoring chances, lacking accuracy in front of the Rubin net.
"I`m very disappointed with the result," Dynamo manager Dan Petrescu said.
"It`s really annoying as we wanted to win today. But I can`t reproach my players as they showed quality football. They just didn`t score."
"Rubin came here for a goalless draw and they have gained their point clinching their season`s seventh 0-0 draw."
In Sunday`s other encounter Terek Grozny earned a 2-1 home win over Kuban Krasnodar.
Brazilian forward Ailton Almeida lifted Terek 1-0 up with a precise spot-kick after 34 minutes, while Polish back Marcin Komorowski added his goal in the 58th minute.
Kuban Paraguayan defender Lorenzo Melgarejo reduced the arrears, lobbing the ball into the net over Terek `keeper Yaroslav Godzyur from close range after a defensive mix-up.
