Margao: Salgaocar hang on to their first half
lead to edge past Mumbai FC by a solitary goal margin in the
24th round I-league encounter played at Nehru Stadium, Margao
here on Thursday.
The win saw Salgaocar move away from the drop zone with
27 points from 24 matches, while Mumbai have put themselves in
the state of being relegated with 25 points from 24 matches
after today`s loss.
They still have two more matches to go.
Salgaocar scored the all important goal in the 15th
minute through Ekene Ekenwa.
The win has landed Salgaocar a big relief as they could
now play confidently against Mahindra United in their next
Knowing that a win was must for their survival, both the
teams played attacking football.
Salgaocar played quick short passes and kept the rival
defense under substained pressure even as they penerated
mostly from the right flank?and after missing two close
chances surged ahead in the 15th minute.
Anthony Barbosa who overlapped constantly on the right
sent a high cross inside the box for Ekene Ekenwa who
brilliantly guided the ball into the net with a glancing
header that beat the out stretched hands of diving keeper Amit
Francis who gave good account on the left had an
opportunity to increase the lead but his shot deflected a
rival defender and went out.
Mumbai who came into their own in the later part of the
first half after introducing Abhishek Yadav in place of
Surojit Roy, had their moments and Salgaocar goalpost survived
two dangerous chances.
First Noel Wilson from the right send a cross into the
box for Surojit Roy whose header was collected by keeper
Kalyan Chaubey in the 35th minute.
Three minutes before the interval, Mumbai FC nearly found
the equaliser when Abhishek header was well blocked by keeper
Chaubey off a cross from Subhas Chakraborthy.
Bashiru tapped the ball of the rebound which defender
Luciano did well to block on the goal line before an alert
Kalyan Chaubey stretching to grab the ball before it could
cross the line.
Mumbai raised their game in several notches and kept the
Salgaocar defense under pressure even as they tried their
best to find the equaliser but rival defense stood tall along
with man of the match Luciano Sobrosa to deny them the
Bashiru Abass who worked hard upfront was unlucky as his
try missed narrowly once. Luck also did not shine on them as
Abhishek Yadav free kick hit the cross bar.
