Salgaocar hold Churchill Brothers

Vasco: Salgaocar held Churchill Brothers to a 1-1 draw in the Super League football tournament organized by Goa Football Association at Tilak Maidan here on Saturday.

Salgaocar, who are inching closer towards lifting the title, took their tally to 22 points from 11 matches after today`s draw.

Churchill Brothers have 20 points from 11 matches.

Salgaocar dominated most part of the first session, but their forwards failed to score due to poor shooting.

Gilbert Oliviera missed an easy chance for Salgaocar of a pass from Milagres Gonsalves in the 10th minute.

Three minutes later, Clifton Dias shot off a pass from Ryuzi Sueoka, which was saved by Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Lalit Thapa.

Milagres Gonsalves also missed a sitter off a pass from Anthony Barbosa.

Churchill came with a counter move and surged ahead in the 32nd minute.

Jaison Vales unleashed a shot from 30-yards that beat goalkeeper Presley Mascarenhas all ends up.

The second half was more lively, as both the teams played attacking game and came close to scoring several times but their upfronts failed to find the net.

Durga Boro of Churchill Brothers had an opportunity to double the lead, but failed to cash in on the chance as he shot off a pass from Henry.

Thangjam Singh, Israel Gurung and Henry all missed chances in turns for Churchill Brothers.

Salgaocar also created ample scoring chances, but Edeh Chidi and Ishfaq Ahmed failed to find the target.

However, after pressing hard to find the equalizer, Salgaocar finally found the net in the 85th minute.

A combined move between Balwant Singh and Edeh Chidi saw the later release the ball to better-placed Milagres Gonsalves who beat Lalit Thapa all ends up.

Salgaocar had a chance to score the winning goal in the injury time, but Luciano Sobrosa shot over the bar of a pass from Augustine Fernandes.
