Subhas` late goal helps Pune FC beat Chirag 1-0

Kolkata: Substitute Subhas Singh struck a
goal in the dying moments to help Pune FC register a thrilling
1-0 victory over local favourites Chirag United at the Yuba
Bharati Krirangan here on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Subhash, who replaced Arata Izumi, scored
the winner in the 89th minute to earn the full points in their
Shield opener and helped their team take the pole-position in
group B.

Pune FC (3 points from one match) lead the table followed
by Shillong Lajong (2/2) while Mohun Bagan (1/1) and Aryans
(1/1) are joint third followed by Chirag United (0/1).

Subhas did well to fire home a volley from close after
his Brazillian strike-partner Edmar Figueira did the

The goal, incidentally, was the first by the 20-year-old
for PFC after joining the team on-loan in the mid-season
transfer window.

The win was creditable because PFC went into the game
resting six regulars, which included Shanmugam Venkatesh,
Paresh Shivalkar, Asim Hassan, Othallo Tabia and Selwyn
Fernandes apart from Subrata Pal, who is doing national duty.

PFC`s defence sported a new look with Sunil Kumar,
Caitano Costa, Rolling Son Hungyo joining Gurjinder Kumar.

In the midfield, Gunashekar Vignesh, J Prasad and Ajayan
gave company to Izumi, who was back after injury.

Up front, PFC preferred to go in with their regular duo
-? Mandjou Keita and Edmar Figueira.

After conceding an early corner, PFC took time before
Keita picked up an Edmar pass and shot out.

However, Chirag, at the other end, found themselves
denied by PFC keeper N Balaji who effected a goalline save to
keep out a Shankar Oraon header after Jerry Zirsanga crossed
from the right flank.

Arata worked with determination. And in one move needed
an equally determined effort by Arnab Mondal to be checked.
And as the game settled into midfield play, PFC almost broke
the deadlock.

With Edmar providing the cross, Keita did well to direct
his header on target, which keeper Somnath Khara managed to
keep out but could not collect it. With the ball rolling on to
an unmarked Vignesh his finish was way off target.

Close to half time, Chirag had a chance when Elijah
Junior meet a Denson Devdas cross well, but the header went
just wide.
