New Delhi: Manchester United have lacked the zeal in midfield over recent years and certainly the likes of Tom Cleverley and Marouane Fellani need to solve United`s answer in midfield. Van Gaal dictates proceedings with a passing flow moulded by attack and his men in the centre of the pitch plays a vital role.
With just the signing of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, United`s problem haven`t been solved. Herrera offers a vision blended with swift eye for key passes and he needs a suitable partner alongside to provide more guile for the attacking third. With Arturo Vidal`s ruling out a move to Manchester and Toni Kroos preferring a more dynamic and attractive galactico starred Real Madrid, United lie short of options in the centre of the park.
There are viable options in Sporting Lisbon`s William Carvalho and proven World Cup winning star Sami Khedira but so far nothing has come forward with the former two.
Therefore the onus now lies with Cleverley and Fellani to seal their place in United`s midfield options. Cleverley who promised to be the next United star had fizzled out under former United manager David Moyes. With limited opportunities, lack of form and a goalless campaign, Cleverley failed to tick any of the requirements of a midfielder. The United home grown player knows his position isn`t safe and has cited in showing more determination to keep his place under van Gaal.
Another such figure is Fellaini who has failed to live up to his big money move from Everton last year. Fellani who had been a chief contributor as an attacking midfielder at Goodison Park, fissured out at Old Trafford.
He didn`t get in the scoresheet at all in the entire season nor he made key assists. That was a key element he possessed in Merseyside. The Belgian received flak from all corners and heads the list of players going out this summer. All isn`t lost though for him as he needs to step up and be back at his Everton best to catch the eye of van Gaal.
United are thin in midfield and with Michael Carrick sidelined for three months, it offers added problem for van Gaal. Darren Fletcher and Nick Powell are the only other players in the role. United are currently playing in the pre-season friendly tournament, International Champions Cup in USA and the midfield resources van Gaal has under his belt know it`s a big platform to show their mettle.
Key enforcements in the area will be made but before that the existing players especially Cleverley and Fellaini would want to show their failed promises are behind them and they are ready for contribution this time. The fact is simple for the duo, it`s now or never!
