Trio to leave England squad, Danny Welbeck doubtful

London: England manager Roy Hodgson revealed on Friday that Raheem Sterling, Leighton Baines and James Milner will all drop out of the squad for next week`s friendly with Italy.

Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand has been brought into the squad, while Danny Welbeck is a doubt for the game after injuring his knee during Friday`s 4-0 win over Lithuania in Euro 2016 qualifying.

"Leighton Baines, it was always my intention to play him in this game and give Kieran Gibbs, or initially Luke Shaw, a game in the second game," Hodgson told reporters.

"We lost Luke and Danny Rose (to injury), and Ryan Bertrand will join us tomorrow (Saturday). Leighton won`t be there. Raheem Sterling won`t be there.

"The other person will be James Milner, who has a knee problem which he`s been playing through.

"He made himself available in case we needed him, but we don`t think we can risk him on Tuesday. He`ll go back for a scan and some treatment to be fit for (Manchester) City."

Hodgson said that Sterling, who scored his first England goal against Lithuania, required an injection for a toe injury, while Welbeck, who also scored, "tweaked his knee" late in the game.

"We were planning to take him off anyway," Hodgson said on Welbeck.

"He`s being assessed by the medical staff, but we won`t get a proper idea until tomorrow.

"The medical staff gave me the impression they`re not terribly worried about it, but that Tuesday may be too soon. But we`ll see."
