New Delhi: The world witnessed a befitting spectacle as Germany`s work ethic heroes demonstrated collective unity in outshining a spirited Argentina side in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2014. This German side under Joachim Loew had a fleet of workers who trumped individuality to perfection.
Germany produced a match-winning hero in every match and there wasn`t any single player who carried the added responsibility in his shoulder to justify dependency. Everybody chipped in, it was a performance that consisted of sublime art and craft. Germany produced a brand of football that was noteworthy over the years.
After being the finalists in 2002 and semi-finalists in the next two editions, Germans finally cracked the formula and played like a unit just like Spain did in 2010. But what was more noteworthy is that they were a notch above their rivals who won the edition previously in the last decade.
On the night where many records were broken, Germany carried the flag of European domination in style.
For a team that battered Brazil 7-1 last Tuesday, a sense of belief ruled the camp. Argentina played their best match in the entire tournament and their choice in upping the tempo paid off. Penalty shoot-out are like lotteries and Loew knew it was in the extra-time he needed to out think his counterpart and his earlier introduction of Mario Goetze in place of Miroslav Klose, paid off.
Goetze demonstrated perfect technique and commendable calm to chest down Andre Schurrle`s pass and sweep in a left-foot finish with the prospect of a penalty shoot-out only seven minutes away.
Everybody touted this match to be a duel between Lionel Messi and Thomas Mueller, but in the end it was a duel between two teams who showed resilience and determination that made it a night to remember.
Goetze, for now, is the figure every German fan will idolise and remember. After a controversial transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich last season, Goetze was a subject of wrath from the fans in Ruhr valley. He got the bad boy image tag and on Sunday he showed why bad guys are successful in charming everybody. In his case, he has charmed the entire world.
What helped Germany was probably the winning mentality that the country`s premier club Bayern Munich had created. The rest joined in and accepted the mantra.
Germany`s gladiators came out strong with methodical hard-working tactics and their current crop of youngsters will look to continue in the same vein providing a vision for attack-based prowess.
