New Delhi: While superstars like Neymar and Lionel Messi took their teams into the knock out stage of the FIFA World Cup 2014, it was the end of the journey for Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal, who were knocked out, despite a 2-1 win over Ghana on Thursday.
Ronaldo, who was struggling with his form in this World Cup, scored his first goal of this edition but that couldn`t prevent his team`s elimination from the tournament along with the African`s. Ronaldo hit the winner with his left foot in the 80th minute to break his drought in Brazil and gave Portugal their first win.
In another match, Thomas Muller continued his good show for Germany and hit a winner against USA, as Germany topped Group G. Despite the loss, USA have also made it to the last 16.
Muller, who equalled Lionel Messi and Neymar to take his goal count to four in the World Cup so far, scored the lone goal in the 55th minute to help Germany win its second game in the league stage.
USA`s going through to the last 16, was a result of Portugal`s 2-1 win over Ghana in another Group G encounter in Brasilia.
It was a huge moment for the Algerian fans when their team got its maiden last-16 entry in the World Cup after closing the door on Russia with a 1-1 draw as 10-man Belgium edged past South Korea 1-0 to stay atop Group H.
Algeria were trailing 0-1 before Islam Slimani scored in the 60th minute of the game.
With Belgium finishing on nine points, Algeria, which will meet Germany for a place in the quarter-finals, ended with four to Russia`s two and South Korea`s one.
