Bhullar looks to get rid of ‘mental errors’

Gurgaon: Young Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar has had a number of strong finishes this season but just one title triumph and the Punjab-pro today blamed it on the “mental errors” he has committed after being in winning positions.

“I will have to sort out my mental errors. In the recent tournaments, I have been in situations where I could have won but I blew it off,” he said.

The 22-year-old has missed the cut just twice this season. Recently, in the Handa Singapore Classic, Bhullar was tied second at the halfway mark but he returned a 72 in the final round to finish tied eighth.

“I have been just making cuts. In Portugal, I made a birdie at the last hole with a 50-foot putt but finished 30th. It could have been better. In Scotland also almost the same thing happened,” he said.

“I am feeling well, chipping well, putting is fine, driving is accurate. Still at times you miss so many putts and spoil one hole, you can’t recover and you miss the cut.

“Sometimes nothing is working. In Brunei, before I was playing in the US, I missed the cut. I was hitting it really bad, my shots were all over the place. So mentally I was feeling weak so I finished fourth. So it is all in your head,” he added.

Bhullar said he is trying to concentrate on the European Tour and would look to get into the top 10 in the Asian tour Order of Merit this season.

“I am ranked 13th in the order of merit in Asian Tour. If I can sneak into the top 10 then I can qualify for the CIMB Asia Pacific at Malaysia in November.”

“With my victory on the Asian tour, I will be playing straight into the European Tour Final Qualifying Stage Tournament in Spain in first week of December.”

“Next year I will definitely go for the Monday qualifiers on the US PGA Tour. This season is almost over, just three more events, but next year, I will go. Looking at (Arjun) Atwal’s victory, it will inspire many players.

“The final stage of US and European tour is clashing and with my category, I think I will stick to the European tour this year,” he added.
