Welsh debutante Jamie Donaldson and England`s Lee Westwood led Americans Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar 1-up after nine holes in Friday`s first Ryder Cup afternoon foursomes match.
None of the four played in the earlier fourball matches.
After both duos birdied the par-5 second, the Americans won the third with a par.
A birdie at the par-3 sixth pulled the Europeans level and they won the seventh with a par to seize the lead. Both teams parred the eighth and ninth.
Furyk, the 44-year-old top-ranked US player at fourth in the world, has a record of 4-6 with two halved in 12 prior Ryder Cup foursomes matches.
Westwood, a captain`s wildcard pick this year for his ninth Ryder Cup, is the lowest-ranked player in the field at 44th in the world. The 41-year-old is 7-4 with four halved in career Cup foursomes matches.
Kuchar, ranked ninth, won his lone Cup foursomes match in 2010, joining Stewart Cink in a 1-up win over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.
