Golfer Kaymer wins Race to Dubai, crowned Europe’s No.1

Dubai: Germany’s Martin Kaymer will finish the season as Europe’s number one golfer after winning the ‘The Race to Dubai’ on Sunday.

Kaymer’s feat was confirmed after Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell missed out on a top three finish at the Dubai World Championship in Sunday’s final round. The German finished with a round of 72, and while McDowell joined him on six under par in a share of 13th place following a 68, it was Kaymer who finished as European Number One. Kaymer notably won the US PGA Championship win at Whistling Straits this season, adding victories at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, the KLM Open and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. In all, he amassed over 3,300,000 euros in prize money. US Open champion McDowell had kept The Race going down to the wire having trailed by over 1,000,000 euros with five weeks remaining. England’s Ian Poulter took a two-shot lead over Francesco Molinari, Ross Fisher and Thongchai Jaidee into the final round of the Championships.Kaymer’s achievement meanwhile earned him a bonus of 1.092 million euros from a 5.462 million pool that rewards the leading 15 money winners. McDowell, unable to add the finishing touch he wanted to an incredible season in which he won the US Open Championship and helped regain The Ryder Cup for Europe, said: “It’s been a dream season and it just so happened that Martin had an unbelievable season as well. “It’s just been a great year for European golf and I’m just very proud to be part of that. “My greatest moment was the putt on the 16th (at The Celtic Manor Resort). There’s nothing like The Ryder Cup.“To give Martin a run for his money this week was very good, but things didn’t really go my way - it’s a golf course which continues to frustrate me. “I played unbelievably well this weekend, but could barely buy a putt.” Kaymer was in contention to finish Number One last year but broke three toes in an August go-kart accident which sidelined him for two months, and he eventually finished third behind Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy.
