Lahiri clinches third pro title
Pune: With a spectacular start-to-finish run, Anirban Lahiri clinched the Rs 30 lakh prize money Aircel-PGTI Players Championship at the Aamby Valley Golf Course near Lonavla on Friday.
The 22-year-old Bangalore man was unstoppable over the 72-hole championship as he came up with his fourth successive sub par round today, a five under 67, to walk away with his third professional title and the winner’s purse of Rs 4,84,950.
Well set to grab the crown after going into the fourth and final round with a six-stroke advantage over second placed Shamim Khan of Delhi, Lahiri started on the wrong foot with a bogey in the second hole before recovering poise.
The youngster’s outstanding four-day run -- 65, 65, 67, 67 -- gave him an aggregate of a whopping 24 under 264, well clear of Shamim who too fired an identical 67 today to finish second in 18 under 270. The latter picked up runner-up prize of Rs 3,34,950.
In the third place, well behind the top two, was Abhishek Jha with a four-round tally of 276 while veteran Ashok Kumar and Australian Kunal Bhasin ended up fourth and fifth with one stroke separating the 3-5 finishers.
Three golfers ended up in sixth spot, C Muniyappa, Vijay Kumar and Bangladesh’s Md Siddikur Rehman, all tallying nine under 279.
A total of 19 golfers finished with under par tallies.
But the hero of the tournament was Lahiri who dropped a stroke on the second hole and then recovered to sink birdies on the seventh and ninth on the outward stretch.
The Bangalore player struck a purple patch as he fired three birdies in the first five holes on the return to finally end up a thumping winner. Lahiri had won two pro titles on the same tour last year.
