Rashid best Indian at Selangor Masters

Shah Alam (Malaysia): Rashid Khan, featuring in his first professional event outside India, underlined his potential with a steady finish at tied 14th, the best among Indians at the end of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters golf tournament on Saturday.

Rashid playing on a sponsor`s invite and teeing up only at his fifth Asian Tour event had previously played Asian Tour events only in India and his best was tied 19th at the Panasonic Masters.

Rashid, tenth overnight, started with a second hole bogey, but had two other birdies on the front nine and played all back nine holes in par for a 71 and at eight-under he was tied 14th and picked up USD 5,193.

Sujjan Singh (69) moved up from 28th to 20th, the same as Jyoti Randhawa (71) at seven-under. Himmat Rai (72) was tied 42nd and Anirban Lahiri (70) was tied 45th. Gaganjeet Bhullar (72) was tied 63rd and Gaurav Ghei (80) had a nightmarish final round and ended tied 70th.

Rookie Joonas Granberg produced a superb six-under 66 to become only the second Finnish player to win on the Asian Tour at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.

Granberg, who set a new course record 62 in the opening round, edged Thai teenager Panupohol Pittayarat by one stroke with his 15-under 273 winning total at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club. The 24-year-old Finn pocketed USD 60,902.

Overnight leader Panuphol, 18, took the runner-up spot with a battling 71 while Adam Groom of Australia shared third place with Filipino veteran Antonio Lascuna in the USD 400,000 Asian Tour event.

Groom, searching for his first Asian Tour title, was tied on 15-under alongside Granberg with the par five 18th hole to play but four putted on the last green for a disappointing double bogey and a 68.

Sukree Othman of Malaysia provided the local cheers by soaring up the leaderboard with a superb 65 for tied fifth place with Australian Marcus Both (67) and Siddikur of Bangladesh (68) on 276.
