Tiger Woods still top-earning US athlete

Washington: Scandal-scarred golfer Tiger Woods is still the No.1 paid sportsman in the United States, according to Sports Illustrated’s eighth-annual compilation of the 50 top-earning American athletes by salary, winnings, endorsements and appearance fees.

The report said that Woods took home a tidy 62.3 million dollars in the past year in winnings and endorsements. Woods earned 2.3 million dollars in winnings and 60 million dollars in endorsements.

The 35-year-old has not won a tournament since November 2009 and is not playing in the US Open this week because of a knee injury. He has fallen to No.15 in the Official World Golf Ranking after holding the No.1 spot for a record 281 weeks.

Fellow golfer Phil Mickelson finished a close second, with total income of 61.2 million dollars.

Miami Heat small forward LeBron James earned 44.5 million dollars to sit third, while Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning at 38 million dollars and New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez at 36 million dollars rounded out the top five.
