Tipped as Scotland`s `next Monty`, David Law in Indian Open

New Delhi: Often called Scotland`s "Next Colin Montgomerie", David Law will make his professional debut at the October 13 to 16 Hero Indian Open, teeing up alongside young Indian golf talent such as Gaganjeet Bhullar, Himmat Rai and Rashid Khan.

The 20-year-old Law, who only last month won a pro event, while still being an amateur, has chosen the USD 1.25 million event as the platform to begin his professional career.

When asked how he felt about coming to India and playing in his first professional tournament, Law said, "I am so excited that the new promoters. The Indian Open has a long and prestigious history and it would be an amazing way to start my professional career with a win at Delhi Golf Club.

"I am also really looking forward to coming to India for the first time and experiencing as much as I can of the Country`s vibrant culture."

Exactly at this time last year, Rashid made his professional debut at the Indian Open after winning a team silver medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games. This year it is the turn of Law, who in 2009 was the first person to hold both the Boy`s and Men`s Scottish Amateur title in the same year.

Interestingly, both Law and Khan have in the past won titles in the prestigious Faldo Series. While Law won the Faldo Series in Europe in 2007, Khan won the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in the same year.

Law is mentored by no less than a former Open Champion, Paul Lawrie.

India`s `Youth Brigade` led by Bhullar, Anirban Lahiri, Rai and Khan have been in the forefront of Indian golf.

Bhullar won the Kensville Challenge an event on European Challenge Tour in Ahmedabad in January this year, while Lahiri won the Panasonic Open (India) in April and Rai grabbed the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic last month. Khan won a pro event, the Surya Nepal Open last year.

India`s other star challengers will include the seasoned three-time Indian Open winner and Asian Tour No. 1 in 2002, Jyoti Randhawa, two-time European Tour winner, SSP Chowrasia and former Asian Tour Rookie of the Year 2005, Shiv Kapur.

While World No. 53 Edoardo Molinari, a member of the Ryder Cup winning team and also a World Cup winner will headline the international starcast.

Also expected to contend and be in the thick of action is Thaworn Wiratchant, who has 12 Asian Tour titles against his name, defending champion, Rikard Karlberg of Sweden among others.
