Johannesburg: American golf ace Tom Watson, who captains U.S. Ryder Cup team, has named the experienced Steve Stricker as vice-captain, giving himself a 47-year-old assistant who could potentially play should the need arise.
Watson joked to Stricker that he should better be playing well, before he added that he hopes that they don`t have to make that decision. Watson had also said that he would wait and see how the former world number one Tiger Woods plays over the next few weeks before deciding on whether he selects him, Sport24 reported. But the 64-year-old legend saw Woods` playing in this week`s PGA Championship after suffering spasms on Sunday as a positive sign for his chances to be at Gleneagles, Scotland, next month. Watson said that he is encouraged, and added that Woods really wants to make the team in the worst way. The eight times major winner said that these players really want to make the team and bring that Cup back. The American s would be seeking to avenge a traumatic loss at Medinah in 2012 in which Europe staged a record last-round rally to retain the trophy and Watson said that after what happened there, he would be the same way and would want to be getting on the team and do what one has to do to get the Cup back.
