Singapore: Filipino Angelo Que has credited breathing techniques he learned from yoga for getting him back in the Asian Tour winner’s circle in Malaysia at the weekend.
The 31-year-old, who beat Briton Chris Rodgers in a playoff at the USD 300,000 Selangor Open for his third Asian Tour title on Saturday, said it was his wife who had convinced him to try out yoga.
“Tracy said I needed to do something about my fitness as I wasn’t getting any younger,” Que said in an Asian Tour news release after pocketing a cheque for USD 60,000.
“I took a one and a half week break in Koh Samui and went with my wife to a yoga retreat centre and just restarted my body,” he added.
“I went on a no meat diet and I started from scratch and it helped me a lot to get my mind off things.”
Que said his wife has reminded him to remember the yoga techniques when he spoke to her the night before the final round, and it had helped him to deal with the pressure of the playoff.“I was doing my breathing coming down the stretch,” said Que. “She had taught me how to do it and if I was thinking too much in my mind, she also taught me something else to snap out of it. I did my breathing diligently and it helped.”
Que’s last two Asian Tour wins came in 2004 and 2008 but were followed by fallow periods -- an error he was determined not to repeat.
“One mistake that I had after winning was that I was full of confidence but I kept missing cuts right away,” he said.
“I think my expectations went up but winning doesn’t mean you’re going to be hitting perfect shots all the time. This time, I’m going to play it like I haven’t won anything.”
