Govt grants Dhoni, Sachin’s wish of flying Sukhoi
New Delhi: The Indian Defense Ministry has granted permission to batting legend Sachin Tendulkar and Team India captain MS Dhoni to fly Su-30MKI (Sukhoi), — the best fighter plane of the IAF.
“Our proposal to fly the two cricketers in the Su-30s has been approved by the Defence Ministry and we are looking forward to their flight in Pune soon," IAF officials said.
Earlier, Indian Air Force chief P V Naik had said he would seek special permission from the government so that World Cup winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar could experience a flight of (Sukhoi) Su-30MKI.
“Sachin Tendulkar is already our Honorary Group Captain. Once both Sachin and Dhoni are free from their cricketing engagements, I will ensure that they get to fly Su-30MKI. They have done our country proud and it will be an honour for us,” the IAF chief had said a couple of months back.
Air Chief Marshal Naik had said that as of now there were no plans of awarding any honorary post to the Indian captain like Tendulkar.
When Dhoni had visited Air Force chief`s residence couple of days after he led India to a World Cup victory, he was seen asking the IAF chief, a veteran fighter pilot, about his flying experience.
“I used to fly MiG-21, MiG-23 during my days,” Naik had reportedly told him.
Pune-based air force station Lohegaon is the home-base of Sukhois and VIPs including President Pratibha Patil and her predecessor A P J Abdul Kalam had also taken off in the mighty jets from the air base.
